Providing Healthy Choices

As we know from our own childhood, our tastes and choices of food are influenced by what we were encouraged to eat as children. Now you are in charge of creating food traditions with your own family. Today, many foods are prepackaged, premixed and prepared for convenience; we have so many choices! To make quality, healthy food choices for your family, refer to the new food pyramid to plan good family meals.

Here are some tips to help you make good nutritional choices.

  • Make a list before you go to the store to shop. Be sure to add food from all food groups.
  • Read labels while grocery shopping, or even after you get your purchases home. Check the sugar, salt and additives.
  • Screen children’ food requests in the grocery store. A treat can be a piece of fruit.
  • Don’t be afraid to say NO! to your children.  Remember to add, “Because I love you and I want you to grow up to be strong and healthy.”
  • Discuss TV ads aimed at children with your children.
  • Decrease your reliance on packaged foods. A bit of extra thought and planning is involved.
  • Keep convenient portable snack foods on hand. Provide a fruit plate on the table, nuts in a jar, cut-up vegetables in the refrigerator, or cut-up pieces of cheese in a container in the fridge.
  • Keep junk food out of the house to make sure that it is not a major part of your children’s daily calorie intake.
